Shelley M. Payne is a professor of Molecular Biosciences and distinguished teaching professor at The University of Texas at Austin. She received her undergraduate degree from Rice University, PhD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and was a Damon Runyon postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at Berkeley. A past chair of the Department of Microbiology and associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Natural Sciences, she now serves as advisor to the Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. Her research is on the molecular biology of bacterial pathogens, primarily those causing diseases of global health significance, cholera and dysentery. She has received a National Institutes of Health Merit award and has served on scientific advisory boards for NIH and PATH. She is a member of the US-Japan Joint Panel on Cholera and Enteric Diseases. She was an editor of Infection and Immunity is currently an editor of Current Protocols in Microbiology. She is a past member of the Texas board for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Her honors include recognition as a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, The American Society for Microbiology Graduate Education Award, the University of Texas Civitatis Award, The President’s Associates Teaching Award, and the University of Texas Regents Teaching Award.
